According to the Institute for Civility, civility is defined as claiming and caring for one’s identity, needs and beliefs without degrading someone else’s in the process. It is also about disagreeing with respect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same.
How are we addressing the problem?Through the Bateman competition, we hope to: enhance the effectiveness of public discourse; improve the understanding of civility; and encourage civil practices.

Civility matters for a multitude of reasons. First, it gives students and people a better understanding of having healthy relationships and building more interpersonal skills. Second, learning proper discourse allows people to be more humble and accept others' opinions or arguments without judgment. Third, civility promotes democracy, which is sustained by active participation in conversation, compromise and cooperation. Lastly, civility is essential in upholding the pillars of our economy, our health and safety, our national security and our civil rights.
Who are we targeting? Our research directed us to target our initiative toward Kent State public relations and political science majors. These individuals will have a high impact in determining how civility is modeled in our future professions and in our lifetime. By raising awareness of the corrosion of civility and educating students about our key messages, we will be able to shape these individuals into civility allies and advocates.
